Easter is a season of celebration. For those of us in North America it comes in spring when we focus on growth, new life, and revel in warmer temperatures and more sunlight; yet in the aftermath of the crucifixion, the disciples are gathered and fearful. They were hidden away: weary, wondering, worried.
There are a variety of themes in the account of Jesus’ appearance to his disciples (John 20). From what is recorded, it is clear that within the community of believers, there were conflicting perspectives, experiences and interpretations of what had happened. In the midst of being first hand witnesses, the disciples still experienced fear, doubt, and confusion.
And Jesus comes. Jesus shows up in their distress and disorientation. Jesus appears and speaks peace.
As you consider your own situations of pain, what would it look like for Jesus to arrive and speak peace? Jesus is recorded with just saying a few things in this resurrection appearance. In your own places of unbelief, what words might Jesus speak to you? Which of these responses is for you in this time?
Peace be with you
I send you
Receive the Holy Spirit
If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them…
Do not doubt but believe
A Blessing for Discipleship
In the places where you are fearful or hiding
May peace be with you
When you are trapped, hemmed in
May peace be with you
When you are sent
And as you are empowered
For the work you are called to do
May peace be with you
May you be generous in forgiveness
Gracious in companioning
Trusting in the word and witness
And in the times of disbelief and doubt
Of harm and hurt
May you remember that peace is with you
